Product Description
Philippines/Spanish American War postal history. Oversized Registered cover with 1899 Philippines 5c Grant (216, Fine NSE) and 15c Clay (218, F-VF NSE) stamps tied by mute killers with “Mil. Sta. No. 1 Philippine Isls, / AUG 16 1901 / REGISTERED." handstamp with "San Francisco, Cal." removed, to GERMANY, endorsed " Via Singapore." Munster, Germany (9-20), received backstamp. The Military Station post offices in the Philippines were substations of San Francisco until May 1, 1899, when they became an independent entity. This cancel with the "San Francisco, Cal." removed is known used from May 15, 1899, until at least Dec. 18, 1901. Scarce high value franking pays double 5c UPU rate and 10c registry fee. Outstanding Registered Civilian Overseas Military Station cover. Attractively mounted for display or exhibit.
